of the heart - a sci-art project funded by the Wellcome Foundation
iINTRODUCTION

Internationally acclaimed composer Sir John Tavener and Dr Philip Kilner and Dr Sonya Babu-Narayam - heart imaging specialists, and the critically acclaimed choreographer Wayne McGregor and his company Random Dance, have collaborated in the creation of an original work on the theme of the heart.

Of The Heart investigates different perspectives in looking at and thinking about the heart. Profound moral and ethical dilemmas continue to arise from apparent discrepancies between ‘scientific’ interpretations of what it is to be human, and, in contrast, our everyday experiences, as well as traditional religious or mystical insights.

These discrepancies are well illustrated by perceptions of the heart – seen medically as a valved, muscular pump, but appearing in everyday language as mediator of human feelings, love and individuality (“heart-broken”, “heartfelt”, “take heart”, “heart-to-heart”, “warm-hearted”).

Of The Heart is an unique collaboration straddling three different disciplines and resulting in a powerful work of art which has enriched the work and experiences of all the participants.

There is the other universe, of the heart of man

That we know nothing of, that we dare not explore

A strange grey distance separates

Our pale mind still from the pulsing continent

Of the heart of man

Fore-runners have barely landed on the shore

And no man knows, no woman knows

The mystery of the interior

When darker still than Congo or Amazon

Flow the heart’s rivers of fullness, desire and distress.
